The Years Go By
by Nikky
When you first look at her, so little
Your eyes swell with tears
She is your first baby girl
She is yours for all the coming years

Then soon she will be walking
A little unsteady at first
Then next she will be talking
With words you can't understand

You'll be taking her to school tomorrow
She's been waiting for so long
Your heart is filled with so much sorrow
You have to lead her on her way

Soon she will start to date
She will fall in love
She will start to hate
But you'll help her on her way

She's ready to pick out a car
You go with her when in need
You'll take care of her forever
And nourish her like a seed

Tomorrow is her birthday she turns 18
Now she needs to be treated as an adult
She just can?t wait to leave this scene
But she is afraid to leave you behind

Now she is almost twenty-one
She goes to you and gives you a hug
She wants to go partying and have fun
But you ask her to stay safe, and she does

You're walking her down the isle
Her hand held to yours as close as can be
The tears trickle down your face
She is all grown up now, as you can see

She is going to be having a family of her own
As she waits for her baby, you are there
You smile sweetly, with tears in your eyes
You have protected her so she wasn?t scared

Now everyone can see
What a good job you did
She's the best that she could be
She listened to everything you said

But now you look back on all the good times
How you taught her how to ride her bike
And the time she caught more fish than you
Even when you took her on that hike

She looks at you with loving eyes
As she sees you laying there, breathless
She holds your hand and starts to cry
There is no way she can let go

As the years pass and no one is there
No one there to show her the way
She understands now what you did and why
She'll always remember you everyday
